Southwestern Ontario is not one market but a chain of them: Hamilton, Niagara, Waterloo Region, Guelph, London and Windsor, each with its own suburbs and farmland around it. For a trades business, the most common mistake here is trying to cover three or four of those cities at once with a budget sized for one. The better plan is to own one city thoroughly, then expand.
A region of mid-sized cities
The region's strength for trades is that it has many substantial cities rather than one dominant one. Hamilton and London both rank among Ontario's eight largest municipalities by population. Waterloo Region holds three cities side by side: Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge, the last created in 1973 from Galt, Preston and Hespeler. Guelph is a separate city surrounded by Wellington County. Niagara Region is made up of 12 municipalities, the largest of them St. Catharines with about 137,000 residents in 2021, according to Statistics Canada.
Each city has its own search behaviour. Homeowners in Cambridge often search by the old town names, Galt, Preston or Hespeler. In Niagara, people search by town: St. Catharines, Welland, Niagara Falls, Grimsby. Your pages and profile should use the names customers use.
Housing and what it means for demand
The cities differ more than outsiders expect. In the 2021 Census, 56.8% of Cambridge's occupied dwellings were single-detached houses, per Statistics Canada, while in Kitchener apartments of all types made up 34.0%. Across Niagara Region, single-detached homes made up about two thirds of dwellings.
For marketing, that means different messages in neighbouring cities. In a city with many rental apartments, landlords and property managers are a serious customer group, and a page aimed at them can win repeat work. In detached-home suburbs, the owner is the buyer, and replacement and renovation jobs dominate.
Seasonality and programs
Southwestern Ontario has the milder side of the province's climate, with winters softened near the Great Lakes, but heating still drives the busiest months for HVAC and plumbing. Exterior trades, landscaping and roofing compress their work into spring to autumn.
As of October 2026, the provincial Home Renovation Savings Program offers rebates on upgrades such as heat pumps, smart thermostats and insulation, run by Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas. Programs change, so confirm details with the administrator before advertising them, and never promise a customer a rebate.
Regulators to know
Wherever you work in the region, the provincial regulators are the same: the TSSA for fuels contractors, the ESA for electrical contractors, and the WSIB for workplace insurance. We link to them on client sites where relevant, but we give no compliance advice. We are not a contractor.
How we approach marketing across several cities
Our usual plan here is to grow one city at a time:
- Choose a home city where you already have reviews and jobs, and build local search there first.
- Add the next city only when the first is producing steady calls, with its own page, its own reviews and, if possible, its own photos.
- Use ads to test a new city before investing in content. Google Ads aimed at one town for six weeks will tell you whether the demand and the cost per job are there.
- Keep reporting by city, so you can see which ones pay their way.
A worked example with placeholder figures: a Guelph roofing company spends $3,000 a month split evenly across Guelph, Kitchener and Cambridge, and gets 30 calls. When it measures by city, Guelph produces 18 calls, Kitchener 9 and Cambridge 3. Moving the Cambridge budget into Guelph and Kitchener, where it already has reviews, typically lifts total calls without raising spend.

Frequently asked questions
Can one business rank in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge at once?
It can, because the three cities sit close together. It still needs a real presence in each one: reviews from customers there, a page for each city with genuine local detail, and ideally a base not far from the middle.
Is it worth targeting the rural townships around the cities?
Often, yes. Rural homes bring different jobs, such as wells, septic systems and propane, and fewer competitors chase them online. The drive time has to make sense for your crews.
How do I handle customers who compare me with US companies near the border?
It comes up less than owners fear. When it does, local proof wins: real Ontario jobs, local reviews and a clear explanation of which Ontario regulator covers your trade.
Should a Hamilton business market into Niagara?
Only if your crews can reach Niagara jobs reliably. Grimsby and Lincoln sit much closer to Hamilton than Fort Erie does, so a gradual, town-by-town expansion usually works better than covering the whole region at once.
